PRODUCT REVIEW: L’OREAL BRASS BANISHER
*originally posted on my former blog on July 16, 2010
L’Oreal Brass Banisher box says, “Reduces strong gold, red and orange tones. Your hair will have a more beautiful and balanced color. Brass Banisher is specially formulated to work on all permanent haircolor brands, even salon color, to remove brassy tones. Just like salons, you can apply it after coloring or highlighting to balance the tone of your new color.”
This sounded like a dream come true. My blonde hair (bleached) was brassy and had some orange hues, so I thought this product would be perfect for me.
The instructions said to leave the product on your hair for 5 minutes, 10 max. I checked after 5 minutes and there was no difference. I checked after 10 minutes, no difference. 15 minutes, nothing. After 20 minutes I jumped in the shower and took it out. Guess what? NO DIFFERENCE!! The brass and orange hues were still there! If anything, it looked like it may have made the orange hue a slightly darker orange, but only noticable to my own eye as no one else saw a difference.

Brassy Tones Reduced: 0/5
Orange Hues Reduced: 0/5
I googled reviews before writing this one and there doesn’t seem to really be any. The ones I did find said it didn’t work for them either, with the exception of one person. I’m gonna have to give this product a fail. Wasted cash and wasted time.

I bleach my hair and am always in need of a good toner, and this is the only product I use. The only thing is that their directions are misleading. 5 minutes does nothing. I have to leave it on my hair for 45 minutes. It does work great, but definitely not after just 5 minutes like the box says!
ReplyDeleteWow, 5 minutes vs 45 is quite the time difference! After leaving it on for 20 minutes myself I gave up hope on this product. Thanks for your feedback!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading many reviews on many sites I was excited to try it after taking out the black in my hair it was orange. Well I was not happy it was still orange, I went from ronald mcdonald orange to ron wesley orange. I left it on for 10 minutes as directed and that's what I go. I ended up dying my haor light ash brown. One go thing about this product is the conditior.
ReplyDeleteI put an ash blonde over mine.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who went from dark reddish brown to light ash blonde, and I recommended this to her (but to leave it on waaaay longer than the box recommended) and it worked! They reallly do need to change the directions on the box though. It really is misleading and makes their product look bad. 45 minutes works for me every time. Hopefully this will help you, because I don't know of any other toners that are so easily available and affordable.
ReplyDeleteI hate misleading information on products. Sounds like they're using the "5 minutes" thing as there selling point.
ReplyDeleteThe product might be just fine, it's just that toner like this is made for hair that's been bleached, not dyed. There's a big difference.
ReplyDeleteI used this on bleached hair. No difference for me after 20 min.
ReplyDeletethis stuff sucks!!! made my hair darker and oranger. very disappointed in this product!
